Meet Our Elders

David Richter

Lead Minister

David and Kelly Richter met in Nashville, TN, in the fall of 2000, while Kelly was working for a local girl’s home and David was serving as an intern with Reformed University Fellowship at Vanderbilt University. They were married in November of 2002 and almost immediately moved to Edinburgh, Scotland to serve as short-term missionaries at the city-center Free Church of Buccleuch and Greyfriars.

After returning from the mission field, David and Kelly attended Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, MO, where Kelly earned a Masters of Counseling and David a Masters of Divinity. Then, in the summer of 2007, they moved to Rochester, MN where they lived and worked at L'Abri Fellowship and David served, first as an interim pastor, and then as an associate pastor, of Trinity Presbyterian Church (PCA).

In May of 2011, Christ The King Boston called the Richter family to move to Boston, MA, to plant a new gospel-centered church in the city of Somerville, MA. After almost ten years of church planting in Boston, the Lord called the Richters to return to Nashville in July of 2021, where David now serves as the Senior Pastor of City Church. The Richters have two wonderful children: Sam and Luci.

Aaron Sands

Elder

Aaron has been an elder at City Church since 2008.

For almost 10 years Aaron toured and recorded, playing bass with Jars of Clay. He then transitioned to a life closer to home as one of the founders of Blood:Water Mission, and continues his work with Blood:Water Mission to this day.

He and his wife Cari were part of the launch team of City Church.
They have two children, Sam and Willa.

Rick Puncochar

Elder Emeritus

Rick became a Christian in the fall of 1969 and was baptized in a very cold stream in southern Oregon. Almost immediately he began to realize that somehow God had poured out his love and Spirit on him by calling him His son. Soon after, he met his wife, Chrissie. They have been married for over 50 years and have four children and 17 grandchildren. They consider it a delight to call City Church their community, and a constant reminder that God has lavished His love on them by putting them in the Body of Christ. His career has been somewhat varied from teaching to construction to sales and finally retiring (sort of) in 2001. Rick still finds himself involved part time in business as well as finding a little time to go fishing with friends and grandchildren.

Meet Our Staff

Virginia Carter

Executive Director

Virginia and her husband, Brett, joined City Church in 2004.  The parish model of City Church (i.e., a church in and for East Nashville) attracted them, and being part of this genuine community of believers seeking to practically live out their faith has held them for these last 20 years.  Virginia has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Vanderbilt and since accepting the Executive Director role in Fall of 2023 has had the opportunity to apply those skills at City Church.  Before serving as Executive Director, Virginia served in various capacities within the youth, mercy & justice, and children's ministries.

Outside of life at City Church, Virginia enjoys exploring new cities, all things vintage, a sunny hike, activities with our three children, and a good read discussed with friends.

Zach Mashburn

Director of Youth & Family Ministries

Zach and his wife Cameron met while students at UTC in Chattanooga and have been married since the summer of 2019. Zach served as the Director of Youth Ministry and the Director of College Ministry at First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga (PCA) for six years until taking the call at City Church East Nashville in 2023. He has been a student at Reformed Theological Seminary in Atlanta since 2019 and is currently finishing up a Masters in Divinity. Cameron received her Masters in Social Work at UT and now works as a therapist specializing in Maternal Mental Health.

Zach and Cameron are thrilled to be at City Church and take part in God’s Kingdom building in East Nashville. If you spot Zach out in the wild, you might find him taking a hike, reading, fly fishing, or playing pickleball.

Sarah Sensenbrenner

Director of Children's Ministry

Sarah and her husband Adam moved to Nashville in 2020 from NYC where she danced professionally for New Chamber Ballet, Emery LeCrone Dance, and others. Sarah joined the City Church staff in the spring of 2023. She is excited to be walking alongside the children of City Church as they learn about and grow in their faith, as the creative beings they are.

Sarah and Adam have a two year old named Ruby. In her free time Sarah enjoys family outings, meals with friends, pilates, and live performances of all kinds.

Seth Kiehl

Communications Coordinator

Originally from Philadelphia, Seth moved down to Nashville in 2008 with a couple of college buddies and they made East Nashville and City Church their home. Seth loves the small-town feel of East Nashville and its quirky, artistic approach to life. Since that time he's worked as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator, partnering with many in the non-profit sector, as well as the large medical community in town. He enjoys taking complex ideas and finding new ways of communicating them visually.

Seth met his wife Amy in 2009 when he was entered in the Red Head Contest at the Tomato Art Festival. They have two children, Andrew and Maisie. Seth enjoys frisbee golf, most board games (especially chess) and camping.

Chris Klinefelter

Interim Church Administrator

Chris moved to East Nashville and began attending City Church in 2008. Chris has worked in marketing for 15 years and is excited to serve City Church in this next season of life.

Chris and his wife Amy have been married since 2010 and have three children. In his spare time he enjoys writing and spending time with his family.

Michelle Raybourn

Music Coordinator

Michelle joined the City Church staff as the Music Coordinator in the fall of 2021. She recently graduated from Belmont University with a Commercial Voice major with a Songwriting emphasis and a Christian Leadership minor. Before moving to Nashville, Michelle led worship at Pine Cove Woods, a Christian family camp in Tyler, Texas.

When not leading worship at City Church, Michelle spends her free time writing songs, reading as many books as she has time for, and going on walks with friends.

Oliver Risch

A/V Coordinator

Oliver joined City Church staff in the spring of 2020. He moved to Nashville in 2012, where he has been working in Music Production and Studio Recording.

When he isn’t running sound, you can find Oliver drawing, making music, and exploring the areas surrounding the city with his wife Stephanie.
